Michael Jeffrey Jordan was born to James Jordan Sr. and Deloris Jordan on February 17, 1963. His mother was a bank employee, and his father was an equipment supervisor. He played three sports at Emsley A. Laney High School in Wilmington, North Carolina. He committed to play college basketball at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he accepted a basketball scholarship and majored in cultural geography. He shot the game-winner against Georgetown in the 1982 NCAA championship game against future NBA rival Patrick Ewing. He averaged 18 points a game, two assists a game, and five rebounds. He earned a unanimous selection to the NCAA All-American First Team in his sophomore and junior seasons. He won the Naismith and Wooden college player of the year awards in 1984 and left before his scheduled graduation to enter the 1984 NBA draft.
During his NBA career, he won six NBA titles and was a six-time NBA finals MVP and a five-time regular season MVP. He was an NBA all-star fourteen times and the all-star game MVP three times, and the rookie of the year for the 1984-1985 NBA season and made the NBA All-Rookie first team as well. He was the NBA’s scoring leader ten times and the leader in steals three times. In 1988 he was the NBA defensive player of the year, and he was selected to the All-NBA second team once in 1985 and was selected to the All-NBA first team ten times and won the slam dunk contest twice in 1987 and 1988. He is a member of the NBA’s 50th and 75th-anniversary teams and won many gold medals for the USA men’s national basketball team.
