Former Duke Player Jon Scheyer Proving He Can Fill Mike Krzyzewski’s Shoes

Jon Scheyer and Mike Krzyzewski are both natives of Illinois, born and raised in the State. That doesn’t definitely translate to being a great basketball coach, though, which goes without saying. Coach K’s mom had an 8th grade education and worked as a cleaner and his father was an elevator operator, and he attributes his success to the work ethic his parents instilled in him. Jon Scheyer is the youngest of three children and enjoyed a great childhood in an upper-middle class household and began dribbling a basketball at age three and played in his first AAU national tournament six years later. Scheyer played high school basketball and got offers from Duke and Marquette and ended up going to Duke to play for Coach K where he averaged four rebounds, fifteen points and four assists a game and would play professional basketball in Israel.

Scheyer’s basketball life took him to Durham, again where he would be an assistant coach for Coach K before Coach K retired and became his successor. Scheyer finished his first season as Duke’s head coach with 23 wins and 8 losses and swept Duke’s rival, the University of North Carolina. Duke had a double bye going into March Madness and despite that lost to a far superior Tennessee team. However, Scheyer had a great year as Duke ended up winning their conference, the Atlantic Coast Conference and Scheyer’s experience that he had thanks to his basketball life being as unique and great as it will help Duke for years to come as it’s clear Scheyer won’t have any trouble filling Coach K’s shoes.
