Depression is a mental health condition that hits harder than most people can realize. As someone navigating through our adulthood, we encounter many daily challenges to balance our lives. A lot of us do not even realize at times why we feel sad over very basic situations.

Depression isn’t just about feeling sad. It can be due to lack of energy, difficulty concentrating, and even changes in our eating or sleeping habits.

Many of us probably experience seasonal depression during winter. While the winter season can make us feel dull and lackluster, there are effective strategies to help combat these feelings and reclaim joy and productivity.

1. Identify
It’s essential to identify what you’re dealing with. Seasonal depression often includes fatigue, difficulty concentrating, changes in appetite, irritability, and a sense of sadness. Recognizing these signs will help to address the problem.

2. Sunlight
Winter months deprive us of sun, so finding ways to soak natural light is critical. Try to sit near windows, or go for a walk outside whenever possible. On cloudy days, light therapy lamps can add more brightness to the room, and our mood and increase our energy level.

3. Physical Activity
It’s hard to motivate oneself to go out to the gym in winter, but even on dull days when it’s hard to find motivation, a quick workout can lift your energy levels. Science says movement releases endorphins, and it’s the body’s natural mood boosters. Workouts can be anything simple like yoga, running, or simply dancing in your living room, as staying active keeps both your body and mind healthy.

4. Stay Engaged
Many people feel isolated during winter months because they socialize less. This only increases sadness. Try to stay connected with friends and family through a simple phone call or text. This simple connection reminds you that you’re not alone and creates hope that you’ll meet them soon.

5. Eat Well
We often crave soups or our favorite beverages during winter. It’s equally important to balance indulgences with comfort and nutritious meals. Foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, such as salmon, avocados, and walnuts, often help regulate mood. Drink lots of water. It’s important to stay hydrated even when we are mostly indoors.

6. Seek Help when Required
Winters can feel overwhelming, but at any point, you are overwhelmed and feel you are unable to balance and look for professional help. A professional can understand your exact situation and help you navigate through medications or necessary help.

Protective hairstyles are hairstyles where one’s hair is tucked away from the body with the ends
hidden. These hairstyles are meant to protect natural hair from external damage and promote
hair growth.

Protective hairstyles are especially crucial during the winter months, according to hairstylists
Francine Kargbo, owner of The Hair Guru. Kargbo said winter weather can strip moisture
from one’s hair, causing dryness and even breakage.

“Protective hairstyles, like braids and twists, help lock in the moisture by reducing exposure to
the weather,” Kargbo said. One can choose from a range of protective hairstyles like braids, twists, locks, sew-ins, bantu knots, ponytails, and wigs.

Prettier Profiles owner and hair stylist Daijah Nabors said the two most important factors clients
should consider when choosing a protective style are their lifestyle and personal skill level when
styling their hair.

“K-tip [extensions], while they can be protective … there’s more maintenance you’re having to
do to your hair, “ Nabors said. “If you like to work out a lot and you sweat a lot from your head,
[K-tips] would not be conducive to your hair growth or protection.”
Kargbo said an important factor to consider when choosing a protective style is whether one’s
hair is heat-trained or not.

“One of my favorite protective hairstyles is sew-in leaveouts, which is your natural hair
is out at the top, and then the rest of your hair is covered … it’s braided down,” Kargbo said.
“You don’t want to do a leave out if … your natural hair is not heat-trained yet, because it
could cause heat damage.” For a client with basic hair skills, Nabors would recommend protective styles like braids, or, those more sensitive to head touch, and locks.

“I would recommend locks because your hair is completely put away. You get retwists every
month to two months, and you do not have to get your hair done often. You’re
simply just shampooing it and conditioning it, ” Nabors said.

Kargbo said her current favorite braid styles are bohemian braids and Fulani braids. She said
with boho braids and general protective styling, it is important to invest in one’s hair.
“The most important thing … investing in the quality of hair that you’re buying,” Kargbo said.
“For wigs, they’re way more pricey, because you have to make sure that you’re buying
quality wigs.”

Nabors said her favorite protective hairstyle is wigs because they provide complete coverage of
one’s hair and some allow for easier removal to moisturize one’s scalp and do other treatments.
Nabors said she recommends finding wigs from a hairstylist who creates custom ones for the
client.

Kargbo said when it comes to wig maintenance, she recommends the Wig Dealer melting spray
as a product when one’s lace begins to lift on their wig. Kargbo said common mistakes people make when implementing a protective hairstyle are over washing, excessive heat, and skipping moisturizing.

“It’s very easy to forget to moisturize your hair when you have a protective hairstyle in,” Kargbo
said. “Even though you have a protective hairstyle and you still have to care for your natural
hair, like oiling your scalp every night when you have your braids in.” Nabors said she recommends moisture for protective styles as well, specifically with a leave-in conditioner, and through shampooing and conditioning one’s natural hair.

“Whether that be a wig, braids, K-tips, a sew-in, you’re always going to want to make sure you’re
moisturizing your leave out if it’s a sew-in, your extensions, or the braid under your extensions
with a leave-in conditioner,” Nabor said. Nabors said water is the ultimate form of moisture.
“Water is the ultimate form of moisture, not just on your hair, but within your body,” Nabors said.
“So consuming enough water, taking your vitamins …what you put in your body comes out of
your body.

We constantly encounter critique and disapproval, whether it’s in the form of uninvited feedback from others, or input we’ve specifically requested. We bottle up what we are doing and avoid letting it out sometimes because we’re afraid of rejections.

On the other hand, reinvent ourselves from what others seem to be approve or disapprove. Because of this, we may feel that we are stifling our own potential.

1. Regularity is Key. Persevere; it’s the daily grind that keeps you inspired, connected to others. Big moments, victories, and defeats will pass. Having a consistent routine that you can always return to can help put any negative feedback into perspective. You get to pursue your passions once again today.

2. Stay Concentrated. Remember where you’re going and why you’re doing things at all times. In doing so, you will be better able to see in plain sight and avoid becoming bogged down by the individual obstacles.

3. Be picky. Carefully consider the feedback you’ve gotten and be prepared to let go of any negative comments once you’ve decided how to implement it. In any case, it’s a mirror of that person’s personal contentment, mood, and pleasure, not necessarily related to you.

4. Keep Pushing. Keep in mind that you are part of the source of your own sense of value. Being self-confident allows you to more readily recover from any negative critique you may get, regardless of who or what provided it.

5. Be Optimistic. If you think positively, good things will come to you. That is speaking it into existence, and it’s something I can attest to from personal experience. Remember the encouraging comments people have said to you anytime you feel the need.

6. Be Precise. Make sure you approach constructive criticism with a level head and not let your internal critic obscure your judgment. Use it as a springboard for personal development; after all, you have to be satisfied with your work for it to be worthwhile.

7. Show Love. Show yourself and your critic unconditional love. Indulge in some self-care. You are deserving of it no matter what happens!

8. Embrace Gratitude. Show grace to those who have been critical of you, take criticism well, and sit quietly to let it all sink in. Thank goodness you have overcome your fears and other obstacles and are actively growing.

9. Show Responsiveness. Instead of answering with whatever comes to mind, give some thought to how you want to handle comments before you respond.

10. Keep an Open Mind. If you’re working on something you might be looking for a certain response. When you put your best effort into something and then get negative feedback or criticism, it’s natural to feel like you’ve “failed” and find it difficult to look on the bright side. Keep an open mind; this “failure” could be guiding you to something better than what you were hoping for.

Blackgold Works is a health and beauty company that prides itself on its multipurpose use and natural ingredients. The owner, Paul Bailey, has created products to help the body become healthier and withstand harsh environments, all while using organic products that are proven to benefit the skin and hair.

Paul Bailey started his career in the Marines and soon found out that many of the products used in the field were not beneficial for his skin and hair, and came with harsh side effects. So when he saw a void, he decided to fill it by making his products good for the body without any harmful effects using only organic products. All of the products can be used on the hair and skin without having to rotate between multiple products to conquer different parts of the body. With the natural ingredients, Blackgold Works benefit the body more than other products that produce side effects and are made with chemicals.

Blackgold Works prides itself on being a healthy alternative to common products seen on the shelves and the kind used in the military. Paul has expressed that many products used in his time in the Marines were not the best for his skin and body, and using his products with all natural ingredients helps the health of the person a lot more than what was recommended for them. Many military members and civilians now have a healthy alternative for their skin and hair to help improve the body.
Downward dog just got a lot more literal with the hottest new wellness trend: puppy yoga.
“Puppy yoga” is one of the hottest new wellness trends that has taken over the internet. It takes
the calm experience of a yoga class, often at a beginner’s level, and adds an exciting twist by
releasing puppies during the session to play with attendees and fellow fur balls.
Depending on the host organization, these yoga classes can consist of multiple types of canines,
from ten week old golden doodles, to a loveable group of adoptable rescue dogs.
But how is this wellness trend actually good for your health?

Here are the top three reasons:

1. Puppy Yoga can help reduce stress

The combination of the relaxing nature of yoga and the playful nature of a dog can help reduce
human stress levels. Despite the chaos associated with a litter of puppies, their comical antics
during class can help participants worry less about how well they are doing at yoga, and take
themselves less seriously. Scientifically, the act of even petting a dog is shown to reduce stress,
specifically the cortisol hormone, and increase oxycontin, the bonding hormone, according to
John Hopkins Medicine.

2. Classes encourages socialization, for humans and canines

A puppy yoga class can be the perfect place to find a fellow animal lover friend. Most likely,
the other attendees also have a soft spot for furry friends. The puppy’s friendly attitudes, and
chaotic running, can also help “break the ice” of an awkward introduction. This positive social
aspect of puppy yoga extends to the furry friends themselves. Socialization is crucial for dogs
around 3-14 weeks, it helps dogs develop into friendly adults.

Puppies need to socialize just like humans do, whether it is through horseplay or pets. During
most sessions, classes mark out time for participants to just play with the dogs, making it the
perfect time for attendees to socialize with both humans and puppies.

3. Puppy yoga is a unique way to practice mindfulness

The practice of mindfulness, or being completely in and aware of one’s present, can be a
challenging task. While practices like yoga are already a popular way to implement mindfulness,
adding some fluffy friends to a session is an entertaining and unique way to deepen one’s
mindfulness. It’s hard to not stay present when there is a hoard of puppies running loose!
Puppy yoga is more than a temporary trend.

Puppy yoga is a fun way to combine care for one’s physical and mental health through a fur ball
filled hour long class. Puppy yoga is spreading nationwide and cementing itself from trend to a
lighthearted activity for yoga lovers, dog lovers, and those looking for a paw-fect place to find
positivity.

The summer season brings new plants to help jump-start your garden and make it the best blooming paradise it can be.

Dahlias– These beautiful flowers can be planted during the summer and love lots of sun. The seeds are great to eat, and you can also make oil from the seeds as well. Sunflowers also have uses in the medicinal field for colds and coughs. Growing your herbs helps you save a little from buying them in the stores, not to mention fresh produce is always welcomed in any meal. Thyme also has medicinal uses and is good for skincare and fighting acne.

Oregano – Another good herb for cooking, oregano also has many health benefits that need a list of their own. Having this plant around will help you come up with many uses for it. It is easy to grow and is tolerant of droughts; it’s a tough plant that grows fast, so be sure to provide it with the right care.

Mint – Mint is a popular herb known for its refreshing taste and uses in cooking and teas. It’s a fast grower and can help with your mental health along with boosting your immune system. It has many benefits and can be a useful plant to have for your household. Mint is a perennial plant that comes back during the summer. Be careful because it grows fast, and it’s best to make sure it is planted by companion plants, but other than that, it is easy to grow.

It is always important to do your research before undertaking a garden. These plants are all different and have different needs and soil. There are many resources to use when finding out how to care for specific plants, and there are always newcomers joining in to get their green thumbs.
Spring is here and so are blooming flowers and longer days. Your body is shifting from seasonal depression to a season of rejuvenation. If you want a new fresh start this spring, you can follow these steps to keep your body motivated for the season.

Take advantage of the sun. Winter is over and the sun is out for longer periods of the day. Take this time to enjoy walks and activities that give you some time in the fresh air. I recommend walking around your local park to anyone I see, it can be a leisurely experience to keep your body and mind in shape and it’s highly beneficial for all ages.

With the longer days, it’s better to make time for your hobbies or to pick up new ones. A daily routine can be repetitive and it’s nice to take a break and enjoy activities that help you stay occupied. As the weather gets better gardening is a great option to stay outside and decorate your surroundings.

With this new season, why not help those in need with volunteer work in community clean-ups? Give back to the community and volunteer your time to those who need it. Try to get in touch with local communities to try to volunteer and this way, it will keep you busy and moving.

Broaden your horizons and expand your social circle. Humans are at heart social creatures, and in recent years people have grown more isolated which is not healthy in the long run. With more people out and enjoying the weather take this time to make connections and say hello to your fellow neighbors.

There are so many options that you can choose from to liven up your life and get you motivated in this new season. Spring symbolizes new beginnings and possibilities so take this time to start something to renew your mind and spirit. Trust me your body will thank you later.

It’s no argument that exercise is an important part of living a healthy life. But lifting weights in a gym or going to fitness classes isn’t for everybody. Whether it’s about time, enjoyment, or cost, sometimes we just don’t want to engage in traditional exercise, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t dozens of other ways to move our bodies. Here is a list of 5 simple ways you can add movement to your daily life without stepping foot into a gym.

Park far from stores to get in extra steps.

It sounds silly but when you’re grocery shopping or running errands, instead of looking for the closest parking spot, park at the end of the lot. Over time, these extra steps add up and you may find yourself getting an extra 1000 steps a day without even trying to fit in an extra walk.

Buy exercise bands for easy at home workouts

If you want to workout but don’t want to invest hundreds of dollars into fancy equipment or just don’t have the room for it, buy some bands! Resistance bands are an excellent, and underutilized, way to train. They are super versatile, with just a couple of different strength bands needed to train every muscle in unique ways. Also they take up very little space so whether you live in a 5 bedroom home in suburbia or a studio apartment in the bustling city, you can still have your own at-home ‘gym’. Plus bands are not nearly as taxing on the body as weights so you can recover faster and more frequently!

At home yoga practice

Yoga isn’t just stretching! You can develop a great amount of strength, mobility, and stability from practicing yoga. It is also a moving meditation, making it great for anyone needing a bit more calm in their life. Like bands, it requires little space or equipment (just a mat and some blocks if you want) and there are thousands of free classes online for yogis of any level. I love Ali Kamenova on Youtube or if you want to invest a bit more into your practice, Bananablondieyoga or Omstars has full classes, mini lessons, meditations, and more.

Make it a fun activity with friends, family, and SOs

Don’t be afraid to ask your loved ones to go on this fitness journey with you. Instead of going on the traditional dinner and a movie date, try rock climbing or pickleball one day. You may find a new hobby you love and even meet some new friends you can continue to build skills with. If neither of those sound fun to you, try hiking. All Trails is a great app that lists hiking trails in all areas of the world plus it even gives ratings, levels of difficulty, and duration! But even if those activities sound too much for you, try just asking your roommate, friend, SO, or anyone you enjoy being around to accompany you on an after dinner walk. You’ll get in some movement, aid your digestion, and develop deeper connections with your loved ones.

Invest in a standing or treadmill desk

This one may be a bit more expensive depending on what you choose but it could be great for those working at home or find themselves sitting at a computer all day. Most standing desks are fairly cheap and easy to set up. They allow users to stretch their legs and get a little extra movement during the course of their day. Treadmill desks are a bit pricier but another great option for those wanting to get in extra steps while working all day. Many treadmill desks vary in speed and incline so you can switch it up throughout the day and experiment to find what feels best for you! This is also a great idea for those who don’t have the time to schedule workouts into their daily lives. You can work and workout at once! Here is an article on the most highly rated treadmill desks!
